Change the world

Programme outcomes:

Nelson Mandela University adopted an “access for success” approach and has several mechanisms in place to broaden access and enhance success, this is rooted in a ‘student lifecycle approach’.

The FYS Programme aligned its approach to that of the university’s “access for success”, where Orientation is one component of the FYS module, mainly focussing on “Induction” to Nelson Mandela University and its resources. The realignment or reimagining of the FYS programme adopts the same approach as the university to broaden access and enhance the success of our first years, by having a staggered approach to orientation throughout the students’ academic life cycle especially their first year at varsity.

Brief summary of how we work:

Training is offered for new FYS Buddies. The FYS@Mandela programme has two phases: the 1st starting the previous year with recruitment, selection and workshops to enhance communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills. The 2nd phase is concluded in the following year, with a three-day core training session.
