Change the world

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

Nelson Mandela University has embraced an "access for success" strategy, implementing various measures to expand access and promote student success, all rooted in a comprehensive 'student lifecycle approach.'

The FYS Programme aligns with the university's "access for success" strategy, incorporating Orientation as the key element of the FYS Programme. This programme introduces students to Nelson Mandela University and its available resources. The FYS Programme adopts the university's method to widen access and enhance first-year success through a phased orientation approach that supports students throughout their academic journey, particularly their initial year at university.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF HOW WE WORK

The FYS Programme is conducted in two phases. We first recruit enrolled students via applications, which we refer to as FYS Buddies once accepted into the programme. Phase one is the recruitment, selection, and workshops to enhance communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

In phase two, FYS Buddies participate in a three-day core training session conducted by experienced FYS Trainers (students who have served as FYS Buddies for at least two years and have received core training from the FYS team)

These inductions include workshops focused on enhancing communication skills, facilitated by Student Success Coaching, along with the development of facilitation and leadership skills, offered by Student Academic Development.
